Many cultures embrace the belief that life energy flows through the body deeply affecting our entire being. Scientific studies and research show that energy does flow throughout and beyond the physical body and that disruptions or imbalances in its flow correlate to physical, mental and emotional illness. Reiki, pronounced "Ray-key", is a gentle but powerful, extremely pleasant, deeply relaxing natural and holistic hands-on energy therapy technique that addresses these imbalances to support good health and well-being. It was discovered By Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800s. (See History of Reiki click here)
Reiki is a Japanese word that means "Universal Life Energy". "Rei" means universal; "ki" means life energy. Reiki is Universal Life Energy. The word "Rei" also means higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness, wisdom that comes from the Universe or Creator, in what ever name you identify with. And "ki" also means vital life-force energy, the energy of the Universe or Creator. The energy that is all around us. The energy that IS everything. This invisible universal life-force energy that surrounds and permeates everything, animates all living things, gives order to our world and is the underlying creative intelligence of the Universe. Reiki is high vibrational universal life-force energy similar to light energy. It is also a precise method - a series of techniques - for connecting to and using this energy.
Some form of "Reiki" can be found in nearly all cultures and all religions dating back to the beginning of time. For example, it is referred to as Chi in China, Prana in India, Mana by the Polynesians, Ruach in Hebrew, Barraka in Islamic, Orenda by the Iroquois Indians, The White Light by Christians and William Reich called it Orgone.
Reiki is spiritual in nature because it is based on a belief in a higher power and the intention to do good, however, it is not a religion, cult, dogma or a doctrine of beliefs. Reiki is practiced by followers of many religious traditions who integrate it into their beliefs. Reiki is spiritually guided, meaning that it has a higher intelligence, knows what the person being treated needs and is guided by that person's Higher Power or Higher Self. The person receiving Reiki receives the highest level of healing energy they are open to at time of treatment.
Reiki is not massage or a tool for diagnosing illness and it is not a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment. It works with the healing effects of all kinds of traditional medical treatments, procedures and therapies as well as psychological counseling and massage therapy. It addresses both chronic and acute conditions, is non-intrusive, non- invasive and supports all healing modalities.
Reiki works naturally and holistically to improve or heal virtually all physical injuries and illnesses and mental and emotional trauma, illnesses and problems and on a spiritual level, often in ways that can not be identified through our limited conscious awareness. It can be used on people of any age and in any state of health including those in hospice care and it can also be used on animals. It can, (and in many cases has been documented to), reduce the negative side effects of various medical treatments, procedures and therapies and shorten healing time; reduce or eliminate pain, stress, tension, anxiety and depression; reduce swelling, inflammation and bleeding and lower blood pressure and heart rate. It can also be used to flush out toxins from the body before and after surgery and chemotherapy treatment. It is gentle enough to reduce the discomforts of pregnant women and can help ease the pain of childbirth. Reiki is also wonderful for behavior modification and changing negative habits.
Deep relaxation in itself is very good for the body and mind. It can help a person not only feel better, it can help a person sleep better. It can relieve painful muscle tension, improve circulation, immune and nervous system function, and help one have a better outlook on life. It can also improve metal clarity, memory and self confidence; increase creativity, vitality, productivity, love and compassion, and make one feel calm and peaceful. And, it is great for general overall maintenance of well-being.
Today, Reiki is practiced and taught worldwide. The American Hospital Association reports that in 2007, Reiki was offered as a standard part of patient care in 15% (over 800) hospitals across the U.S. Surgeons such as Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of the most respected cardiovascular surgeons in the U.S., uses Reiki during open-heart surgeries and transplants; with many more doctors and surgeons now offering Reiki to their patients. Clinical trials and on-going scientific studies are also being conducted by many hospitals including The Cleveland Clinic. (See Reiki in Health Care, click here.)
Reiki works by encouraging the natural healing processes of the body and mind by restoring the flow of energy in the body. The body itself regulates the amount of energy it receives and where it goes. The energy flows through the practitioner not from the practitioner.
A Reiki session encourages and helps the physical body and mind to relax enough to repair and heal itself and speeds up the healing process. Reiki is performed in an atmosphere that allows for complete and total relaxation, free from outside distractions, through the use of aromatherapy, candles and soothing music to help aid in the relaxation process; on a comfortable massage table with pillows and a light cover. Clothing is never removed and no oils are used. Reiki techniques are so adaptable, that one can receive it in a chair or bed and through casts and bandages.
Still and focused, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or slightly above several areas of the head, upper body (from neck to pelvic area), back (from shoulders to tail bone) and limbs. Their hands may also be placed over or on an injured area or area of pain or discomfort.
Although Reiki techniques may appear simple, the effects and results can be subtle to profound. Most people experience deep relaxation unlike any other and feel calm and peaceful. After a session, they feel refreshed and renewed and later enjoy a deep restful sleep. And, as with most medical treatments and therapies, a number of sessions are usually required before real improvement and results are achieved. This is one of the reasons why Reiki practitioners encourage their clients to take Reiki training so that they can give themselves, as well as family and friends, Reiki on a regular basis.
The best part about Reiki is that it is not just about healing others, it is about healing ourselves. And we all know that we need to take care of ourselves and heal ourselves before we can truly help others. Reiki can be used every day, or several times a day, as often as desired, to help heal situations, physical problems, mental problems, emotional problems, calm anxiety, reduce or eliminate pain, send blessings, give thanks, etc. Reiki is for real people. It is a wonderful gift that families can learn. Anyone, even children, can go through the training and work with the energy of Reiki. Those taking care of loved ones who have cancer or any serious or terminal condition can bring the healing energy of Reiki to them every day. They can also bring it to themselves to keep up their strength during difficult times.
A Reiki session is quite affordable. And, although it is usually not covered by health insurance, the benefits are priceless. Reiki training is also very affordable and is taught in small groups of 4-8 people. (See Reiki Classes, click here.)
There are many applications and uses for Reiki. Some examples are, (besides using it for health issues), anxiety over upcoming events, releasing the pain from past events and painful experiences, changing bad habits, relationship issues, distant situations and challenges that are miles away, treating pets, plants and the planet!
